Sugar
Why I avoid it
- Sugars are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, causing hyperglycemia (high blood glucose). Regular consumption of high glycemic foods can lead to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.
How to spot it
- Food labels may list sugar under many names: sugar, fructose, cane sugar, corn syrup, and about 60 others. SugarScience has a comprehensive list.
- Processed foods almost always have added sugars.
- Fruit juice seems healthy but is effectively just sugar. I opt for vegetable-based juices or smoothies made from whole blended fruit instead.
How I avoid it
- I read food labels and skip anything with added sugars
- I drink coffee black
- I drink water over juice or pop
