Microplastics
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that have become pervasive in our environment. I try to minimize exposure room by room, focusing on where I spend the most time and where plastic contacts heat or food.
Kitchen
Avoid plastic or chemical coatings coming into contact with heat or anything consumed — including during preparation and storage.
- Solid wood or steel cutting boards
- Stainless steel or cast iron cookware (pots, pans, etc.)
- Stainless steel eating and cooking utensils (tongs, forks, knives, spoons, spatulas)
- Reverse osmosis water filter system (for drinking and cooking water)
- Glass storage containers, bottles, and jars (lids might be plastic — don't heat with them on)
- Stainless steel blender container (Vitamix makes one)
- Stainless steel or glass measuring cups and spoons
- Stainless steel strainer and colander
- Stainless steel or glass mixing bowls
- Ceramic dishware
- Ceramic or glass cups
- Medical grade silicone baking spatulas (not the same as food grade)
- Glass, cast iron, ceramic, or stainless steel baking dishes and pans
- Stainless steel or glass kettle
- Stainless steel or glass coffee maker
- Glass bottle for your SodaStream system
- Stainless steel lined tub in dishwasher
- 100% cotton or linen towels
- Plastic-free cleaning tools (sponges, scrubbers, etc.)
- Prepared foods, condiments, and spices that come in glass containers
Bedroom
The goal is clean air and avoiding microplastics shed by synthetic fabrics during sleep.
- 100% cotton, linen, or wool sheets and blankets
- Wool or down filled duvets and pillows
- HEPA filter air purifier
- 100% cotton or linen curtains
- 100% cotton or linen sleepwear
- Wood flooring
