With anything you put on your skin, you'll want to avoid products that use ingredients known to be an irritant or harmful when absorbed. Using the EWG's website and their scoring system, you can find products that have very low concerns with the categories: Cancer, Developmental & Reproductive Toxicity, and Allergies & Immunotoxicity.
What gets applied to the skin could very well be absorbed and end up in your blood thereby passing any toxins around to organs. Knowing this, it's important to truly understand the ingredients of products that you use. One of the best ways of checking ingredients is by looking up products and their chemical makeups on the EWG. They have a vast amount of data on individual products and will highlight what's considered safe vs toxic. Every product that comes into contact with your skin should be evaluated.
